Episode 31 | Leading Through Uncertainty

As I sit down to write this, the air is thick with anticipation—it’s election day. My anxiety is palpable, despite my best efforts to manage it through prayer and action. I've donated, advocated, and cast my vote for my preferred candidate. Yet, for the first time, I find myself deeply concerned about the potential consequences if the other candidate wins.
Leading a social impact organization intensifies these worries. Historically, Republican leadership has often meant reduced funding for social programs, which exacerbates the needs of vulnerable populations. While my organization, Interfaith Family Services, is not overly dependent on government support, we know that a decrease in funding for others can create a ripple effect, forcing us to compete for private funding that is already scarce.
On the flip side, a Democratic administration may usher in increased community support, but it could also lead to unpredictable changes within the sector that challenge our methods and operations. Regardless of the outcome, one thing is certain: change is on the horizon for social impact organizations, and with change comes uncertainty.
Finding Stability Amidst Chaos
But here's the silver lining: we’ve navigated tumultuous times before. Just five years ago, we faced the unprecedented challenges of a global pandemic. If we take a moment to reflect on that experience, we can craft an agile strategy for moving forward. Our role as leaders in this uncertain environment boils down to three main goals:
Maintain a sense of stability
Reduce stress
Achieve success despite it all
1. Maintain a Sense of Stability
To instill a sense of stability, we need to redirect our team’s focus from the uncertainties beyond our control back to what we can influence. This week, I reminded my team that while we cannot dictate what happens in Washington, we can control how we serve our community right here at Interfaith Family Services. We can ensure that those who walk through our doors feel peace and hope.
As leaders, our job is to safeguard the continuity of our services amidst external chaos. This requires a commitment to focus on our mission and to reassure our teams that they are part of something meaningful.
2. Reduce Stress
Next, it’s crucial to find ways to alleviate stress. Here are some strategies we’re implementing:
Small Acts of Care: I plan to bring in breakfast for the team the morning after the election. A little gesture goes a long way in showing we value them.
Promote Self-Care: We’re encouraging our team to utilize our relaxation room, take walks, and participate in guided meditation sessions. November will be filled with weekly self-care reminders.
Time for Renewal: Our offices will close for the last two weeks of the year, allowing staff to recharge for the upcoming year.
Streamline Operations: We’re cutting back on nonessential activities to focus our energy where it counts. This includes reevaluating the necessity of meetings and prioritizing tasks that align with our core mission.
3. Focus on Achieving Success
During uncertain times, it’s vital to celebrate small wins. Each month, we’ll reiterate our goals and acknowledge our progress. Whether our aim is to simply endure a challenging period or to reach specific benchmarks, celebrating achievements—no matter how small—reminds us that we are making a difference.
Breaking down goals into manageable tasks and regularly recognizing our successes fosters a sense of motivation and accomplishment.
Support for Leaders
Leading through uncertainty is no easy feat. It’s a challenge to support others when you yourself are feeling anxious. Yet, there’s a maturity in being able to act positively, even when your emotions are at odds.
We all need a safe space to process our feelings—someone who can handle our raw worries. For me, that person is my husband. His support is invaluable as I navigate these turbulent waters.
Equally important is faith. In shaky times, I turn to the Word of God, finding comfort in promises that anchor me. I believe that no matter the chaos around us, there is a higher power at play. "If God is for us, who can be against us?" is a mantra that fortifies my resolve.

As we stand on the brink of change, let us feed our faith and embody the stability, care, and determination our teams need. Regardless of the outcome today, we have the power to lead with intention and compassion, creating a better tomorrow for those we serve.
