Episode 36: Lessons & Leadership (Part 2)

In Episode 36 of the Life & Leadership with Kim Williams podcast, we dive into lessons 6 through 10 of my Top 10 Leadership Lessons for 2024. These lessons are all about protecting your time, energy, and resources, while also reminding you of the importance of self-care and perspective. Whether you're a seasoned leader or just starting out, these insights are meant to help you reflect, refine your approach, and lead with purpose into the new year.

Lesson 6: Be Leary of Vendors Who Do Not Guarantee Their Work

In today's world, where AI-driven marketing often overshadows true client-centric strategies, it’s more important than ever to carefully read the fine print when entering business agreements. If a vendor or firm doesn’t offer a guarantee on their work, whether it’s a refund or partial refund if the job isn’t completed to your satisfaction, proceed with caution. Don’t be afraid to negotiate terms before signing a contract, and remember: if something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. I’ve learned the hard way that ignoring your intuition rarely leads to a positive outcome.

Lesson 7: Endorse, Appreciate, and Continue to Do Business with Good People

One of the most important investments you can make as a leader is in relationships—with people who are trustworthy, reliable, and value integrity. When you find those people, stick with them! They are your greatest assets, and it’s easy to take them for granted when they consistently deliver. In a world of shifting priorities and short-term wins, good people are invaluable, so don’t underestimate the power of loyalty and appreciation in your business relationships.

Lesson 8: Don’t Settle for Less

In 2024, I learned the hard way that empathy should never compromise your standards. As someone who has seen struggle and knows what it’s like to be overlooked or underestimated, I’ve always had a soft spot for people facing tough situations. However, I’ve realized that not all crises are created equal. People with character, even in hard times, will rise to the occasion without needing exceptions or handouts. On the other hand, those who lack work ethic often perpetuate their own struggles. So when it comes to hiring, contracts, or expectations—whether you’re paying or being paid—never settle for less. Ensure you’re getting what you’re worth and offering the same in return.

Lesson 9: More People Are Inspired by You Than You Know

Whether it’s through your social media posts, the way you show up in meetings, or your leadership style, you have more influence than you may realize. People are watching. They’re paying attention to how you handle challenges, how you treat others, and how you lead with integrity. And while they may not always like your posts or offer visible praise, many are quietly inspired by you. Keep showing up as your authentic self because you never know who you’re impacting.

Lesson 10: Make It a Priority to Enjoy Your Life

As leaders, we often fall into the trap of working endlessly, thinking our work will never be finished and that the organization needs us at all times. But trust me—life is short. I’ve learned the hard way that all work and no play doesn’t just make you dull, it can lead to burnout, depression, and disillusionment. It’s essential to take time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Let your hair down, spend time with loved ones, and do the things that bring you joy. The organization will continue without you, and while your contributions are important, your well-being is priceless. In this season of my life, I’m intentionally making space for relaxation and meaningful connections.

These final five leadership lessons for 2024 are all about balance—protecting yourself, appreciating the right people, setting boundaries, and taking time to enjoy life. As you head into 2025, I encourage you to reflect on these lessons, apply them to your leadership journey, and lead with intention, purpose, and joy.

Don’t miss out on these important lessons—tune in to Episode 36 now and get inspired for the year ahead!
