Like many of you, I returned from winter break with a full plate. Nonprofit leaders know this feeling well—whether it’s preparing for a spring event, dealing with unexpected resignations, or facing uncertainty in federal funding, the start of the year often brings challenges. On top of that, our clients, teams, and boards look to us for steady leadership in the midst of it all.
To lead well, we need to be calm, focused, and wise—but how do we find clarity when everything feels chaotic? Here’s what I did.
1. Remember Your Mission
When faced with a flood of responsibilities, it’s easy to get distracted by all the things we can do. But true focus comes from centering on what we are called to do.
I can do many things—speak, write, coach, strategize, fundraise, create, and even debate. But my real impact comes from the work that aligns with my experience, passion, and purpose. The things I am called to do may require effort, but they also energize me and make a meaningful difference.
I know that I am:
A strategist who helps people overcome obstacles to reach their goals.
A coach who provides insight, inspiration, and accountability.
A partner to those who are already clear on their “what” and “why” but need help with the “how.”
And just as I know what I am called to do, I also know what I am not called to do:
I work best with doers, not just dreamers.
I partner with servants over salesmen.
I thrive in scaling established organizations, not launching startups.
Understanding this keeps me focused, ensuring that my energy is spent in ways that create real impact.
2. Respect Your Limits
No matter how driven we are, we all have limited capacity. We only have so much energy, time, and resources, so how we invest them truly matters.
In 2025, we must be crystal clear on how we want to spend these resources. That means:
Preserving energy for the things we are called to do.
Protecting peace at all costs in chaotic seasons.
Creating automatic responses for distractions so we don’t waste time on things that don’t align with our purpose.
3. Respond with Wisdom
Not every opportunity is the right one. Not every challenge requires our full attention. And not every problem is ours to solve.
When faced with decisions, wisdom is key. Instead of reacting impulsively, we must pause, evaluate, and respond with clarity and intentionality.
The Bottom Line: Protect Your Focus
Focus isn’t just about what we say yes to—it’s about what we intentionally say no to. As leaders, we don’t just manage tasks; we set the tone for our organizations, our teams, and ourselves.
The beginning of the year may have been chaotic, but clarity is possible. Stay centered on your mission, set healthy boundaries, and lead with wisdom. When you do, you won’t just survive the challenges ahead—you’ll thrive in them.
You’ve got this. Keep leading with clarity, courage, and confidence!
