Preparing to Lead in 2024 | Bonus Resource

As we prepare to lead in 2024, I recommend beginning the year by doing these three things.

1. Get crystal clear on your goals. My fellow church kids in are familiar with Hanukkah 2:2. It is the scripture that we hear at the end of every year in Christian vision-board sessions, sermons, and New Year’s Eve services.  For those of you who may not be familiar with this passage, it reads, “Then the LORD answered me and said: ‘Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.’”  This scripture teaches us that all new endeavors should begin with not just a vision but a clear vision that makes running the race and sharing it with others easy.   To clarify the vision, ask yourself these questions.

  • What do I really want to accomplish as a leader this year?

  • How do to accomplish in terms of client outcomes and impact?

  • What is the culture in which I want to accomplish my goals?

  • Who do I want on my team?  What are their characteristics?

  • How will I keep my team motivated, inspired, and appreciated?

  • How do I wish to cultivate our donors?

  • How will I appreciate our volunteers?

  • Put it all on a one-pager and revisit it every Monday.

2.  Get organized to overcome obstacles. Consider some of the goals that you set for yourself as a leader that you did not accomplish last year. Ask yourself what happened. Was it difficult for you to find the time to get it done? Did you start on them only to have situations and circumstances get you off track?  Then, think about the issues that you faced. What were some of your greatest challenges? What were some of your most significant problems?  If you had a chance to do it differently, what would you have done? For me, I found that organization and preparation increased my capacity to handle the problems, challenges, and issues that arise unexpected.

3.  Get clear on your “filling stations” and plan your 2024 journey accordingly.  The only thing that we know for sure about 2024 is that there will be unexpected and unanticipated events that will require our attention and energy to navigate successfully. We will need to keep our mental tanks full so that we will have the capacity to face calmly, strategically, or successfully the unexpected.  Identify the things that relax and restore you and plan to do them regularly.

Finally, none of this will be a reality if I do not schedule it. So, I’ve taken the time to block out my schedule to make honoring these commitments that I have made to myself easier.  Let me know if you find these tips helpful.
